PORTRAIT PAINTINGS
John approached portrait painting with a great respect for the discipline and he studied in detail the techniques used by the masters of oil portraiture. Although he tended to portray his sitters in quite an academic manner, there lay behind his paintings the tremendous gift for drawing from life, at a unique time and place, that we see from his earliest sketches onward. A person’s very particular character would often leap out through the formal portrait technique. A number of his portraits cannot be shown on this website as they were painted for commission and are now with their owners.
