PAINTINGS OF BUILDINGS
John Hall was fascinated by architecture. His paintings that feature buildings are, as well as an exploration of the way that the light was falling over their forms in that moment, a celebration of the way that particular people have constructed those buildings within that locality and the way the structures have then weathered into their surroundings. As with his more purely landscape paintings John worked first and foremost, directly from the subject. Any reworking of a painting in his studio would be done with much thought and care, but the main inspiration was always the place itself.
